A real American experience at Ed’s Easy Diner

Eating a burger which has crispy bacon - the type you only really get in the US - while listening to Johnny Be Good on the jukebox - what could be more American?

Well, now you can have this experience in Crawley’s County Mall (opposite Primark) thanks to Ed’s Easy Dinner.

The new diner opened in Crawley on August 19 and has proved a big success and our waiter Martin assured us it has been as busy as it was when we went since the the day it opened.

You can’t help but smile as you walk in and are greeted by the perky team. Martin welcomed us with a smile and took us to our table - complete with Jukebox.

Having a five year old you are always looking for things to keep the young ones entertained and Martin was armed with some crayons and the kids menu which had a dot-to-dot, a wordsearch and much more on it. He also gave Noah (the 5-year-old) a 20p piece to pick a song on the jukebox - Martin clearly knew what he was doing.

As you looked around you could see people tapping their feet and bopping along to whatever Elvis, Buddy Holly, Little Richard or Beach Boys song was playing at the time (Noah picked Surfin’ USA). It was a lovely atmosphere and perfect for family dining.

The menu is pretty much burgers or hot dogs - but what a selection you have to choose from. There are twelve juicy hamburgers on the menu. Made with prime British beef, there is the Pulled Pork De-luxe with BBQ pulled pork and Cheddar cheese or the Big Bubba’s bacon’n’cheese burger.

If you are a Chicken lover - there is the Chicken Acapulco burger with American cheese, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and spicy salsa while those with a penchant for hot-dogs will go mad for the Chilli Dog topped with chilli con carne and diced onions.

There’s even salads such as the Chicken Dijon with chicken breast goujons, bacon bits and honey and mustard dressing for those looking for a lighter bite.

You can have any of these bites solo or in an Ed’s Plate combo, which includes your choice of main, plus fries, coleslaw and onion rings.

I opted for the All Day Breakfast Burger - which came with the aforementioned crispy bacon, an egg and hash brown which filled the bun.

My wife went for the Chicken and Bacon BLT while young Noah, sporting a lovely little chef’s hat provided for by Martin, enjoyed the children’s Beef Burger meal.

We all had a strawberry milkshake (other flavours available include Oreo, Peanut Butter and Buttersctch) and it was lovely to have a milkshake that didn’t feel like it was just milk with stawberry flavouring.

We just about had enough room for pudding - and again there was a great selection. Between us we had the warm pancakes with maple syrup, A Lot of Waffle - a warm waffle with ice cream and chocolate sauce - and a Strawberry Sundae.

It really was a fun and tasty experience and I imagine diners will be rocking around the clock to go Ed’s Easy Diner. If you eat there, you’ll be craving to go to sock hop straight after!
