RESTAURANT REVIEW: The Greyhound, Pound Hill, Crawley

But they may not mention, or even know, is the quality and value of food you get there now.

The Greyhound has an idyllic rural setting offering peace and tranquility, whilst being on the doorstep of the Manor Royal estate and Gatwick Airport, thus providing a perfect getaway for local workers.

For years the marbles was one of the only reason to visit the Tinsley Green pub, but since brothers Richard and Pete Patel took over two years ago, they have turned into a family friendly establishment which offers a great atmosphere and a diverse selection of food.

Pete is the executive chef and he speaks so enthusiastically about what he and his brother are trying to achieve at the Greyhound.

They are aiming to be family friendly but also attract a clientele of 25+. And they provide quality food but are not looking to be fine-dining or be a gastro pub.

And on our visit they have pitched it just right.

They have two menus, a classic pub menu with dishes like lasagne and pork belly and an Indian menu which has a wide range of authentic dishes.

But you don’t have to pick either menu, you can mix and match.

And here was so much variety to pick from that we could have chosen 20 different dishes between us.

One of our party went all classic pub, but the rest when for a mixture of Indian and British.

The starters we had were an onion bhaji, stilton mushroom, white bait and crispy chicken strips. The crispy chicken strips were very tasty and were complemented with a lovely barbecue sauce.

For mains we had lasagne, a wonderful caesar flatbread, king prawn bhoona and lamb pasanda.

The pasanda, Pete informed us, was more authentic than you would get at any other curry house.

It was beautifully cooked and the lamb was very succulent.

For pudding we had ice cream sundaes and caramel profiteroles.

The portions were very generous and provided good value for money with the starters ranging from £5 to £7 and the mains from £8 up to £13.

It’s good hearty food and a family friendly environment.

And on Sundays they offer a carvery. At the moment it is a standard carvery but soon Pete is introducing a Indian spiced leg of lamb to the carvery - something you won’t be able to get anywhere else in Crawley.

Being a cold February night, we didn’t get to appreciate the incredible outdoor space the Greyhound has.

But we will be back in the spring to appreciate the vast garden. And of course, to enjoy the World Marbles Championships!
