Many things were acceptable in the 80s – the wearing of leg warmers, back-combing, finding Jim Davidson funny, and kidnapping your college principal.

The latter probably only applied to these students from Haywards Heath College, who were part of the fearsome Hit Squad which snatched Brian Derbyshire from the sanctuary of his office in 1984.

The Hit Squad were part of the college’s fundraising festival week and they were sponsored for every person they managed to kidnap.

Festival week also included sports tournaments, a pop quiz, a 24-hour non-stop broadcast by a bunch of amateur radio enthusiasts and a mock election.

The election featured candidates such as the Beach Party, the Gucci Socialist Party and the Defeatist Party – the latter of whom failed to show up.

What are your memories of festival week at Haywards Heath College?
