Poetry and verse in a bar

Guildford folk are being invited to take to the stage and enjoy an evening of poetry and spoken verse at a bar in the town.

Bar des Arts, which is located opposite the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Millbrook, will be hosting a poetry and spoken word open mic night on Tuesday, September 11 from 7.15pm.

Sara Burks, co-owner of Bar des Arts, said: “Our free open mic nights have proved extremely successful in the past, and we are looking forward to holding another event with Anthony Anaxagorou, Chris Britt-Searle and Fran Isherwood all taking to the stage.

“Anthony is a writer and performer of compelling honesty and compassion. He writes from his own experiences on topics related to the spiritual search for inner peace and detachment, alongside themes relating to politics, racism, history and philosophy.

“Chris is a highly-impressive performer who has taken part in our poetry evenings before. He has wowed us with his fluent, imaginative and often humorous poems.

“Fran is a breath of fresh comedic air and is never caught without an appropriate pun. Dónall Dempsey, who has performed at previous poetry events at the bar and Jan Windle will be hosting the evening together.”

Sara added: “This is fast becoming one of our most popular events with our customers. The performers are always very entertaining and the evenings are full of laughter. We hope lots of people will come along and enjoy our next event.
