War veterans look back at their past

THREE World War One veterans contemplate their past and plan for their future as Heroes comes to the Mill Studio at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre from Friday to Saturday, April 13 to 14.

“Set in 1959 in provincial France, it tells of Gustave, Henri and Philippe who have set up a little domain in the back terrace of their retirement home,” says spokeswoman Laura Butler.

“They look to defend it from all-comers but also feel the desire to escape their existence confined by their age, frailties and infirmities.

“Their interaction produces a study of ‘les poilus’ (WWI soldiers) and their tales, experiences and fears transpire through their misogyny, grumpiness and genuine camaraderie.

“Written by French playwright George Sibleyras and translated by Tom Stoppard, the show is directed by Simon Downing.”

The brainchild of Alan Moorhouse, The Atre Company is a new professional theatre company from Hook, Hampshire.
