A26 at Newhaven: Police give update on serious incident

Sussex Police confirmed road closures were in place on the A26 in the vicinity of Newhaven Port following a lorry losing a load of timber.

A police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called to the scene in New Road at 7.33am on Wednesday (May 13).

“Initial reports suggest that some of the timber fell on to a car, seriously injuring the driver.

“There are no further details at present, but the road is likely to be closed for some time.”

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Newhaven, Lewes and Roedean attended the incident.

A spokesman told the Express: “We were called at 7.35am to attend Avis Way, Newhaven, following reports of an road traffic collision involving one car and one LGV.

“Crews assisted police with the incident and left the scene at 7.53am.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed crews were called to the incident, but could not provide any more information at this stage,

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to report to Sussex Police online or call 101 quoting serial 251 of 13/05.
