From Saturday (October 3), drivers will be diverted around Arundel as repair work begins to the Fitzalan Bridge, which carries the A27 over Fitzalan Road and the River Arun, just east of the Ford Roundabout.

Highways England said the bridge would be ‘fully refurbished’.

“This will include resurfacing the road and footpath, installing new kerbs, replacing bridge joints and repainting bearings,” said a spokesman.

“The work will be carried out over the next four weekends, during which time the A27 over the bridge will be closed.”

The planned closures are as follows:

- Saturday, October 3, at 8pm until Monday, October 5, at 5am

- Sunday, October 11, at 5pm until Monday, October 12, at 6am

- Saturday, October 24, at 8pm until Monday, October 26, at 5am

“The final weekend may not be required if progress is not affected by adverse weather,” added Highways England.

It said a ‘clearly signed diversion’ would be in place for traffic.

Travelling from east to west, traffic will leave the A27 via the Clapham Interchange, then travel along the A280, A259, A29 and then A259 again at Bersted before rejoining the A27 at the Bognor roundabout, on the Chichester bypass.

“For safety reasons there will be no access from Fitzalan Road on to the A27 while work is taking place. In addition, the footpath over the bridge will not be open as usual during the work. Pedestrians will be escorted over it when it is safe to do so,” said a spokesman.

Drivers using this section of the A27 were advised to plan their journeys and allow some extra time to reach their destinations.
