The tragedy took place at about 1.20pm moments after a Hawker Hunter jet performed a loop.

The plane was seen speeding to the ground, where it slammed into the A27, hitting a number of cars, and exploding. So far, seven people have been confirmed dead, with another victim remaining in a critical condition.

Fourteen other people also suffered minor injuries.

In a statement this evening, a Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister sends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the people who were so tragically killed after a jet crashed into several vehicles in West Sussex.

“The Prime Minister’s thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims.”

Organisers have decided to cancel all of tomorrow’s flying at the airshow, which was being held at Shoreham Airport.

This afternoon’s crash is the second disaster to strike at the airshow in its 26-year history.

In 2007 another Hawker Hunter crashed.
