Housing group Affinity Sutton held the event to mark what it calls the “regeneration” of Wilmington Way, now known as ‘The Americas’.

The joint venture between Affinity Sutton and developer Linden Homes provides 186 new homes, of which nearly 40 per cent are “affordable”. There is a mixture of houses and flats, with 115 homes for private sale and 71 for “affordable” rent.

The new homes are said to have been developed to a high environmental standard, maximising the use of renewable energy with south facing pitched roofs designed to capture sunlight and to get the most out of the solar panels.

The development replaces the previous homes with a mixture of sizes and types of housing, including larger family homes and wheelchair accessible properties.

The original Wilmington Way residents were involved in the design and location of their new homes and several have now returned to the development.

Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames and deputy Haywards Heath mayor Stephen Hillier were among those attending.Grant funding of £3.55m was provided by the Homes and Communities Agency to help pay for the affordable homes.

The estate is at the northeastern end of Haywards Heath.

Locally there are Boston Road and America Lane.
