Anger after Hurstpierpoint charity posters taken down

Bill Kent, secretary of reMEmber charity, based in Hurstpierpoint has described the action as ‘anti-social behaviour, which looks like a deliberate attempt to deprive a much-respected local charity of the means to help suffering patients’.

The posters, which Mr Kent said were taken down twice from the notice board by the green, were advertising a music and dance evening on May 9 at Danny House.

He said: “I am assured by the staff at the Parish Office that this has not been done by them, so I can only assume that some local busybody has taken it upon themselves to remove it, though why I cannot imagine.

“reMEmber is a Hurstpierpoint-based charity dedicated to helping adults and children (especially local people) who suffer with the chronic illness M.E.

“We rely on events like the evening at Danny to raise the funds needed, so the effect of removing the poster is to potentially reduce the amount available to help these unfortunate people.”

Mr Kent said he will put up another poster with a note asking for the poster not to be removed until after May 9.

The charity is making the 70th anniversary of VE day with music made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra and other bands of the era, performed by Michael Gverney with singers Jo Kimber and Hurstpierpoint’s Helen Bartlett.

Janice Kent, Director of reMEmber, said: “On May 8, 1945 people danced in the streets when the end of World War II in Europe was declared. We are going to celebrate 70 years of peace in Western Europe in a similar way.

“Come and join us in this fun event and help support a really good cause at the same time.”

Janice added: “We are only a small band of volunteers but we have been very effective in getting help for adults and children who have this chronic illness.”
