Anger at police cars speeding near village nursery

A councillor has questioned why police cars went past a nursery at pick-up time '˜at more than 60mph'.

Police and paramedics were called after a cyclist in his 60s and a car collided on the A275 at about 2.30pm on Tuesday (February 23).

Parish councillor Simon Crabb, 40, was picking up his three-year-old daughter and a friend’s child from Chelwood Gate Nursery in Beaconsfield Road.

He said the two police cars had their lights on when they sped past about two metres from where they were in the nursery’s car park at 3pm.

He added: “I would understand if it was an ambulance crew driving quickly to the cyclist, but what exactly are police officers going to do?”

A police spokesman said: “Two police cars were responding to a serious collision on the A275 in Chelwood Gate involving a car and a cyclist which happened at around 2.30pm on Tuesday.

“Police officers responding to emergency calls using audible and visual warning equipment are permitted to exceed speed limits if it is necessary and justifiable, but at all times driving as safely as possible. Any police vehicle not attending an emergency must observe the speed limit.”

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “The cyclist, a man aged in his 60s was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken as a priority to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with suspected head, back and leg injuries.”
