Appeal as cats in need of loving homes

A Sayers Common charity is still appealing for help in finding homes for its older cats.

Paws and Claws rescue centre is trying to rehome cats and those that may need a little extra care after the successful rehoming of diabetic cat Merlin.

“We found him a new home after a reader saw his photograph in the Middy,” said Lyn Bassett of Paws and Claws. “This big, handsome diabetic cat is now leading a very spoilt life with a couple who are devoted to him and who are able to give him his daily insulin injections. We have a history of care, and success with such cases but it is an ongoing problem.”

Despite the economic downturn they managed to rehome 63 cats last year.

As many people tend to prefer younger cats and kittens the home has seen an increase in older cats waiting to be rehomed.

Lyn said: “There are many cats who have been with us far too long and are getting fed up and depressed with cattery life. We understand people wanting the youngsters who are hopefully going to be around for a long time but in our experience it is so rewarding to adopt an older cat so they can enjoy comfort, security and company for the rest of their lives — and they have a lot to give.”
