Author takes a leaf out of Dickens' book

Burgess Hill writer Amanda Green has taken a leaf out of Charles Dickens' many books and decided to publish her debut novel Water Water in instalments.

There have been a few changes since his day though, so instead of appearing in a printed periodical each weekly episode will be posted on her blog goodenoughfordickens.com with a new instalment coming out every Friday.

Serials have always been popular, and they’re having a revival at the moment – Downton Abbey author Julian Fellowes has used this format for his latest title Belgravia.

Amanda has been published online before – her prizewinning short story Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud can be found on the Country Life website and she thinks that the blog is a perfect place to release new fiction, even a full length novel:

“I think a serial is a great way to write, especially today when people are always in a rush. Everyone can find five minutes for the next instalment, and I hope the readers will keep coming back each week to find out what happens next.”

Water Water is set in London, where Amanda used to live and work before moving to Sussex with her family in 2010. The heroine is librarian Laura Poole, who sees something strange in the darkness through the window of a tube train on her way to work one morning. Drawn into the secret world of a hidden people living below the streets, she finds herself in the middle of a conflict that threatens London, and takes a stand in the struggle to save the city from catastrophe.

Amanda says: “Laura is a modern heroine – sceptical at first, when she realises what’s at stake she uses her brains and her wits to fight for her city. There is a man on the scene, but when he disappears she doesn’t sit about moping, she just gets on with doing it herself!”
