BURGESS HILL ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMENS SECTION: Our AGM commenced with our Branch President, Celia Baker, outlining her activities during the past year, which included travelling to Ypres and the Menin Gate. She also said what an honour it was for her to be present at the River of Poppies ceremony in Muster Green, and to have had the opportunity to recite the lovely poem “In Flanders Fields”

Our Treasurer, Evelyn Clarke, then submitted her Report which detailed our financial position.

Sarah Voce(Chairman) then addressed the Meeting during which information was supplied in elation to Remembrance Ceremonies in November. Remembrance Sunday this year will start at 06.00 with a Piper at the War Memorial and end at 20.00 after the lighting of the beacon. In between, there will be the usual parade from Cyprus Road car park to the War Memorial and the service in St Johns Church followed by refreshments in the Constitutional Club. There will be a parade of lanterns from St John Church to the beacon site in St Johns Park at 18.00 following a service with WW1 poems the beacon will be lit.

Sarah thanked everyone for their assistance, especially the helpers at Bingo which raised £800 for us to send to the Womens Section Benevolent Fund at HQ, and for support in maintaining the Womens Section. This concluded the AGM.

We then enjoyed a talk by David Parker on WW1. He explained the items of uniform , contents of their Pay Books and the Kit which each Soldier carried (which weighed 60 lbs) His talk was not only very interesting but also most informative and full of little known facts. We were then able to examine exhibits which David has brought with him, and what an eye-opener these were.
