A spokesman for Burgess Hill Town Council said sponsors provided some outstanding prizes for a raffle and auction, which saw a total of £1,045 being raised for the mayor’s chosen charities Help for Heroes and the Woodlands Meed Trust.

Guests at the ball included the chairman and past chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, as well as mayors from neighbouring towns.

Cheques are due to be presented to both charities at a council meeting on Monday night, the town council said.

Mrs Cherry said she would like to thank the following sponsors; Filipino/British association of England, P&S Gallagher funeral directors, Hassocks Golf Club, Flavour curry restaurant, Bennett Christmas Insurance, Martin Stoner Jewellers, Waitrose, Tesco, Bolney Wine Estate and Garry Wall, leader of the district council.

Guests at the ball enjoyed a drink on arrival, a four-course meal, and music.
