The ball was her first major fundraising exercise and saw 70 guests dance the night away Gatsby style at the Hickstead Hotel in Job’s Lane, Bolney, Hickstead.

A spokesman for Burgess Hill Town Council said sponsors provided some outstanding prizes for a raffle and auction, which saw a total of £1,045 being raised for the mayor’s chosen charities Help for Heroes and the Woodlands Meed Trust.

Guests at the ball included the chairman and past chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, as well as mayors from neighbouring towns.

Cheques are due to be presented to both charities at a council meeting on Monday night, the town council said.
