Cathedral service marks 125 years of family support

A MOVING service at Chichester Cathedral celebrated 125 years of family support work across Sussex.

Dignitaries from all over the county were among more than 400 people who gathered for the Chichester Diocesan Association for Family Support Work anniversary.

Leading the congregation was Mrs Susan Pyper, the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, along with former High Sheriffs.

The service on Sunday, October 3, started with a civic procession made up of the mayors of Chichester, Lewes, Worthing Brighton and Hove, Littlehampton, Haywards Heath, Seaford, Uckfield and Peachaven, and consorts.

The deputy mayor of Hastings, representing the mayor, the vice-chairmen of East and West Sussex county councils, and the chairmen of Adur and Arun district councils also took part.

During the service, the Lancing College Choir sang, the sermon was preached by the Bishop of Chichester, the Rt Rev Martin Warner, and the Bishop of Horsham read a prayer.

The congregation then moved into the private garden of the Bishop’s Palace for a reception.

There were celebrations before the service, when the association held its annual meeting in the Old Kitchen.

Mrs Margaret French from Southwick was made a vice-president, having started working as a volunteer on the adoption committee in 1960.

Mr Rodney Pratt, of Bookers Vineyard, Bolney, was also made a vice-president.
