CARE FARM: Chailey Heritage Foundation has a long history of using animals for therapy, and they know how beneficial this can be to young people with complex physical disabilities and health needs. They are setting up a Care Farm on their site providing many opportunities for the young people to interact with animals and learn in an engaging outdoor setting. The Care Farm will provide a truly multi-sensory learning environment with new sights, sounds, textures and smells to experience. The area will be designed specifically to meet the needs of the young people, with fully accessible wheelchair friendly walkways and a covered Outdoor Education Centre. It will initially house goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and ducks. Within this area, groups of young people will be able to participate in activities such as feeding and animal care sessions. This would be a regular part of the School timetable for many pupils, and would also be used by young disabled adults from the community and local schools. OPEN GARDEN: in aid of St Peter’s Church Restoration Fund takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30, from 2pm to 5pm. The garden at Chailey End, Oxbottom Lane, Newick, is in a beautiful setting with a variety of interesting plants, shrubs and trees. Admission is £3 with children, under 16, free. 50 THINGS WILD WEEK: at Sheffield Park and Garden is from Monday May 30 to Friday June 3 starting at 11am and the cost £3 to £5 a child. From raft building to pond dipping, there is a different 50 Things activity to tick off your list every day in half term. CORO NUOVO YOUNG MUSICIANS BURSARY 2016: The Friends of St Peter’s Church and Coro Nuovo, the leading Sussex based choir, are delighted to announce details of the preliminary round of the Coro Nuovo Young Musician Bursary which will take place at St Peter’s Church, Chailey Green, on Sunday June 5 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The new bursary, in the sum of £500, will be awarded to help to further the studies or continuing development of a young musician from Sussex. Nine contestants, from voice to violin, aged between 17 and 25, are taking part in the preliminary round which members of the public can attend. Tickets priced £5, to include tea and cake, will be available on the door or from Janet Barnes on 01825 722574 or e-mail [email protected]. Proceeds from the event will be shared between the St Peter’s Church Restoration Fund and bursaries for future young musicians.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE BLUEBELL RAILWAY: want to find out more? A ‘Find Out More Day’ is taking place on Sunday June 12. Anyone, skilled or unskilled, who can offer a day a month or more to the Railway are invited to ‘find out more’ about volunteering in our various departments. And if under 16, you can gain experience in the 9F Club. SUSSEX VS SURREY: County women’s cricket match is on Sunday June 12, starting 11am, at Sheffield Park’s historic cricket ground. This is the first time that Sheffield Park has hosted a women’s county cricket match and is sure to be an exciting game. Entry is via the landscape garden and normal admission applies.

NIGHTJARS ON RED HOUSE COMMON: with Ian Woolsey, of the Commons Society, is on Tuesday June 14. Meet at Red House Common car park, Warrs Hill Road, ready to start at 9pm. This will be a chance to hear the sound of male birds ‘churring’ on the Commons on a summer evening. The finish will be in the dark so do take a torch.

‘PATRONS, PLACES AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN’ :is the subject of a talk at Sheffield Park on Thursday June 16 at 6.30pm. National Trust garden history specialist Richard Wheeler explores the life of ‘Capability’ Brown and reflects on the challenges of working with such large landscapes and demanding patrons. COACH OUTING to Dungeness: National Nature Reserve takes place on Saturday June 18 from 9.30am to 5pm. This is a follow up to an excellent talk, to the Commons Society, by Nikki Gammons in 2014 on the Bumble Bee. Nikki will be the guide at this wonderful reserve. FATHER’S DAY BARBECUE: at Sheffield Park and Garden is on Sunday June 19 with and extended midsummer opening till 9pm. The barbecue will be from 2pm to 6.30p, with barbecue items costing from £5. Normal admission applies.

MODEL RAILWAY WEEKEND: is being held on Saturday and Sunday June 25 and 26 at the Bluebell Railway. Model and miniature railway displays will be at both Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park stations which will be open from 10am to 4pm. Do go along, enjoy a steam train ride and explore each of the stations and exhibitions. Passengers holding a travel ticket gain free entry to any stations. FRIENDS OF CHAILEY WINDMILL: The Windmill and Rural Life Museum will be open on Sunday June 26 from 3pm to 5 pm. Among the exhibits are photographs of Chailey from the early 20th century, the restored 1856 clock from St Peter’s Church and a record of the village’s military history going back to the late 1700’s.Entry is £1 for adults and 50p for children aged 10-16 years.
