Community champions grant to help good cause

Persimmon Homes Thames Valley has awarded a community grant to a West Sussex partnership which maintains a multi-purpose centre with 600 regular users.

The housebuilder has donated £1,000 to The Yews Community Partnership as part of its Community Champions scheme, a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding to match money they have raised themselves.

The running of building was handed over to The Yews by West Sussex County Council in 2011 and it is now home to more than 30 voluntary groups including a special needs playgroup, Alcoholics Anonymous, an MS social club, Talking News for the Blind, Relate, a mental health support service and Arthritis Care.

Speaking on behalf of the Trustees of the Partnership, Treasurer Timothy Fraser said: “Thank you very much for your generous donation. We could not have been more pleased to hear that the Persimmon Community Champions scheme had selected us to received match funding of £1,000.

“The money will enable us to replace the four asbestos fire doors in our community building, one of which is in a poor state of repair and needs to be replaced urgently. It will be more cost effective to change all the doors at once and we are now able to go ahead with this work.

“Since taking over the running of this large Victorian building in 2011 we have faced ongoing repairs and maintenance. One of the significant problems has been the presence of asbestos, which has prevented us making structural changes to adapt the building to make it more suitable for our users’ needs. It will be a considerable relief to know that we now have the means to finally banish the asbestos risk safely and to undertake the necessary alterations to the building for the benefit of our user groups.

“Once again many thanks – your support really does make a great difference to our ability to continue our work.”

Rachel Faulkner, sales director for Persimmon Homes Thames Valley, said: “The community building at Haywards Heath is a popular and important facility offering a range of services and activities to local people and The Yews’ application for funding displayed all the qualities to make a perfect Community Champion. It is clear they are doing so much for the area we are delighted to support their cause which will help so many people.

“Again this month we had a large number of nominations for the scheme and I would urge any charity or organisation that missed out this time to get in touch and apply.”
