Dental records from the skeletal remains allowed the police to positively identify the mother of three, who was aged 50 and was living in Eastbourne when she disappeared in 2003.

This year detectives said they believed she had been murdered. Last week a search began of a garden in Icknield Way, Luton.

A 66-year-old man and a 39-year-old man, both from Luton, previously arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and preventing a lawful burial were arrested for murder and have been bailed.

A murder inquiry for the mother-of three was launched in January 2014 after proof of life enquiries failed to show any signs of Mrs Doherty.

Mrs Doherty’s family are being supported by police.
