Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which took place at around 5pm on Wednesday August 5.

The driver of a silver BMW 1-series car made an obscene gesture at the driver of a white Ford Transit Connect van, police said, before suddenly stopping the BMW in front of the van.

The van was forced to stop and the car driver got out of his car ‘with a stave of some sort’, a Sussex Police spokesperson said.

A woman from another vehicle tried to intervene, but on reaching the van the angry motorist spat in the driver’s face before returning to his own vehicle and driving off.

Police said the rush hour incident would have forced several drivers to slow or stop to avoid colliding with the vehicles involved.

PC Claire Harthill said: “This happened in the rush hour and there will have been plenty of people who saw the way in which the vehicles were being driven.

“They will also have seen the altercation involving the drivers and I would ask anyone with information to come forward.”

Witnesses can email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 1227 of 5/8. Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
