Fears over families falling victim to fraudsters

One in seven people across the South-East are worried about their families falling victim to fraudsters, according to a new poll1.

This compares with 68% nationally, highlighting a knowledge gap about fraud.

The survey also shows that 69% of people across the South-East admit they have never discussed the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and those around them from financial fraud.

The new research findings were released to mark Take Five Day - the first time all major banks, building societies and other financial service providers have joined together for a national day of fraud awareness raising activity.

Take Five Day is designed to encourage everyone to find out more about how they can protect themselves from financial fraud and takes place as official figures reveal that £768.8 million was lost to financial fraud in 20162 - the equivalent of £2 million each day.

Stuart Skinner, Director of Fraud at Nationwide Building Society, said: “We’re proud to support Take Five Day. Research shows that people in the South-East are worried about themselves and their families falling victim to financial fraud. On Take Five Day we’re encouraging everyone to talk to others and share the Take Five message - to pause and think before they respond to any financial requests or share any personal or financial details.”

Leaflets and business cards detailing the following five top tips have been handed out:

1. Never disclose security details, such as your PIN or full banking password

2. Don’t assume an email, text or phone call is authentic

3. Don’t be rushed – a genuine organisation won’t mind waiting

4. Listen to your instincts – you know if something doesn’t feel right

5. Stay in control – don’t panic and make a decision you’ll regret

Regional research findings also revealed that in the South-East 71% of people living in Brighton worry that financial fraud will happen to someone in their family and yet 66% have never discussed with anyone the steps that they can take to protect themselves from financial fraud.
