Police appeal after Burgess Hill shop staff member assaulted

Police are appealing for witnesses after a thief assaulted a shop worker who tried to stop him stealing.

Shortly after 7.45pm on Tuesday October 22 a man was seen stealing cold food items from Co-op in Maple Drive, Burgess Hill.

When challenged outside, the man assaulted a member of Co-op staff.

A 22-year-old man from Hassocks was arrested on suspicion of theft, assault and criminal damage and questioned before being released on bail until November 27.

PC Adam Tidy, of Sussex Police, said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who was in or near the Co-op at about 7.45pm on Tuesday.

“I’d particularly like anyone who saw the shoplifter being challenged and the moments that followed.”
