Warning over doorstep crime in Mid Sussex

Mid Sussex police have issued a warning over doorstep crime.

The force said people have been targeted by rogue traders offering home improvement services – or by bogus callers claiming to be from the council, police, health carers, market researchers or utility and phone companies.

A spokesman said: “We have received reports of recent doorstep crime, this type of crime can affect anyone, but often elderly and vulnerable people are targeted.

“Such callers may offer services such as window/gutter cleaning, path and driveway repairs, roofing or building work, gardening and tree lopping or even persuade residents that they must come inside their homes to ‘check something’.

“They can be very persuasive and convincing in their approach and in what they say.

“It is easy to be taken in, the message is simple – If In Doubt, Keep Them Out.

“Also, never be afraid to report anyone who is suspicious to the police.”

Call 101 to report a suspected rogue trader or 999 if a rogue trader has taken money from you and is in your home or still in the local area.

People should also call 999 if they think someone is a distraction burglar.
