A bottle of Laurent-Perrier champagne at Waitrose costs from £40 to £86. And Bollinger starts from £24.99 to £190.

Mid Sussex Prevention Inspector Darren Taylor said: “Clearly someone has got an expensive taste stealing champagne.

“Normally a shoplifter will go for the basic stuff – like a bottle of cider!

“Thanks to quick thinking from the security guard, we attended and attained and reported this person and they will be appearing at magistrates’ court in due course.

“I guess you could say the bubble burst!”
