Darts marathon raises £11,000 for local hospices

Sharp-throwing was needed by the teams competing in the annual Darts Marathon organised by the Rotary Club of Cuckfield & Lindfield. Despite several pub closures, twenty organisations took part, including pubs, clubs and churches to raise sponsorship of over £8,500.

A further £2,500 was raised from 52 advertisers in the event programme which is distributed widely to all the participants in the competition, the Rotary Club members and to their friends. It is also placed in all the venues for visitors to pick up.

The prize-giving took place at the Ansty Social Club on June 20th. Ansty teams took the highest score prizes with the Men’s team scoring 32,121, the Mixed team scoring 29,641 and the Ladies 26,342. The teams of six throw to achieve the highest score in one hour, with a five-minute break in the middle. Members of the Rotary Club keep score and ensure that, despite the speed that is essential, nobody gets hurt. The prize for the highest sponsorship, went to the team from St Giles Church, Horsted Keynes, who raised £1,610.Cheques for £5,500 were presented to Gill Cronin of St Peter & St James Hospice and to Paul Goulet of the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Both recipients responded by thanking the Rotary Club for its many years of support. They pointed out that their hospices now cost £6,000 and £6,800 per day to run, and that they get very little support from the Government.

Fund-Raising Chairman of the Rotary Club, Alex Mackenzie, had opened the meeting by thanking the many team representatives present for their participation. He also thanked Rotary Club members for their hard work and time in organising another successful event. Barry Reed, President Elect of the Rotary Club said that the event was fun, not only for the teams, but for the organisers as well, who enjoyed meeting lots of people in the area.
