Monica Hill, who is known to her friends as Sue, said she was ‘delighted’ that Christian care charity the Mothers’ Union has been recognised.

“Sue was very surprised to receive the news of her medal as she feels what she does is very little compared to what others do,” said friend and volunteer Vicki Macken.

“However she was delighted that the work of the Mothers’ Union has been recognised.

“Sue has worked with children all her life as a volunteer including starting the Hurstpierpoint village playgroup in 1965.

“She was one of the Mothers’ Union members who took over the running of the parent and toddler Group in 1996 and has been running it ever since.”

The Mothers’ Union has four million members worldwide and Sue said she sees herself as ‘just doing her part the same as other members all around the world’.

The Hurstpierpoint group is just one of many parent and toddler groups run across the UK by other Mothers’ Union members.

Sue has given a great deal of her time to the Hurstpierpoint branch, running parenting courses and helped the branch raise funds for local, national and international projects.

Members of the branch also provide crèche facilities in prisons, holidays for families in need and provide cake and support at the Princess Royal Hospital for parents with sick children.

As a Christian organisation meetings always include prayers for members and the projects they support.

Volunteers like Sue are vital to maintain the charity’s ability to support families and mothers around the world.

Vicki said: “Members of the Hurstpierpoint branch of the Mothers’ Union are agreed that it is wonderful that Sue’s many years of hard work have been rewarded with this medal.

“She has always been valued by us and so we are delighted she is now receiving wider recognition.

“She is a great example and inspiration to others and we are sure many in Hurstpierpoint will agree she is much deserving of this medal,” added Vicki.

The British Empire Medal is just one of the medals awards on the New Year’s Honours list.

Sue joins 291 other people around the UK who have also been recognised for their civil or military service.
