The Airbus A400M Atlas was seen flying over the county earlier this afternoon (June 8). According to air traffic reports, it came from the northeast part of Sussex, and flew over Cuckfield, Gatwick, Sompting, Lancing and East Worthing before swinging around low over Shoreham Airport and heading north again.

Among those who spotted the aircraft and managed to take some photos was Matt Maynard, 44, from Lancing.

He said: "My dad phoned me and said if I look to the skies the Atlas 400m was coming over the house.

"I work at Gatwick and am used to big planes but this was an amazing sight to see over Lancing."

According to the RAF website, the Airbus A400M Atlas can carry 37 tonnes of weight over 2,000 nautical miles and can accomodate 116 fully-equipped troops and even a Chinook helicopter.

The 147ft long, 42m-wingspan aircraft can also reach a maximum altitude of 40,000ft.

Earlier today, RAF Brize Norton tweeted an explanation as to why it was in the area.

It said: "This afternoon, our A400M aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Gatwick, Shoreham and Edinburgh, whilst engaged in essential training.

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against Coronavirus."
