DITCHLING WI - the October meeting welcomed David Eaton who gave us a very interesting talk on his Company. The making of silk and then how it is dyed and finally made into garments for the fashion houses. From the silk moth to the caterpillar living on mulberry leaves until six weeks later a cocoon is formed from which the silk is spun. He brought different types of silk to show us and described the work involved. Now in these digital times designs can be sent for printing on the silk fabric from here to the country where it is made. This was followed by a special tea and the flower of the month was won by Briony Coomber. Our next meeting is the AGM on Thursday 5th November at 2.15pm in Ditchling Village Hall. We will also have a Beetle Drive !Visitors welcome.Contact 01273 845069
Notes from Ditchling Village Association meeting -Future plans for the 2016 Fair

Olivia Broadbent-Smith Fair Chairman outlined the progress so far. The Website is now up and running. The title for the Fair will be Kith,Kin and Community. It is planned to choose a King and Queen for the 2016 Fair and these young people will be chosen on a nomination basis. The nominees will be asked to choose their young person on their good deeds, role models and community spirit etc. They will be Village Ambassadors between the Fairs for example - being present at the Newcomers’ Party and taking part in important village events. Nomination cards will be available from 26th February from Ditchling School, Downland’s School and Post Office etc. The Nomination Evening will be held on Saturday 5th March. This event is being sponsored by Clifford Dann Estate Agents. It is hoped to start the Float Parade from Ditchling School. A fund-raising “Ceilidh” for the Fair will be held in the Village Hall on Friday 5th April. The Museum will be involved with the Fair this year. There will be an Art Competition again and free canvasses will be available from the Museum shop. A talk/lecture/performance tent will be at the Fair as well as the tent for the art contributions by the public which may be for sale. Harris Fair and Climbing Wall will also be coming again. The marshals for the parade to be organised. Several sponsors are showing an interest and will be encouraged to offer their help. Mrs Robinson thanked Olivia for all the work she is already putting into the 2016 Fair. Fair Committee members welcome

The News from the Organisations - Ditchling Scouts
Alec Gaskin reported that the number of young members remains steady. At this moment the number of adult Leaders remains adequate. At the end of the year we shall require a new Group Administrator (non-uniformed role) to replace a forthcoming retirement.

Report from John Willis read by Pam Gaskin Village Orchard Maintenance - held on the last Sunday of the month.Sunday, 27th September, 11am - 1pm. If you can spare half an hour or so, we’d love to see you. Bring weeding tools, secateurs and very importantly gardening gloves to deal with stinging nettles.
NB - There is a regular newsletter for anyone interested - email Tae Chisholm at ditchlingorchard@hkdtransition.org.uk

Ditchling.com - the website is still active as previously, with the future events listing being used widely. We haven’t issued any membership requests to Ditchling groups this year in anticipation of the changes to come, but we have kept all the memberships active as previously, so that news and events can be added. It would be good to make an announcement sometime soon of the planned DVA ‘takeover’. I’ve had a few email exchanges with Graham Sharpless recently and he has been doing some conversion and maintenance work on the website, but - as I guess you are aware - his move to Dorset has considerably delayed the work on the DVA formats for the revised website, but I believe he is now giving this his priority.

Ditchling Museum Mr Browne reported that the Museum had held a Business Consortium Meeting where a plan was discussed for an event named “Christmas in Ditchling” being celebrated in the first week of December, including Christmas Shopping etc. A photographer in the village to be contacted.
