Inspirational leadership has helped a nursery keep its top Ofsted rating.

Rosebud Montessori, in Lower Church Road, Burgess Hill, underwent its first inspection in almost seven years in December and the findings were published on January 14,

Rating the nursery ‘outstanding’, inspector Hannah Barter said in her report: “Staff are inspirational and the teaching is excellent. Staff are enthusiastic and constantly motivate children.”

As for the children themselves, Ms Barter said they made exceptional progress at Rosebud and demonstrated “highly impressive independence skills”.

During her visit, the inspector watched the children take part in indoor and outdoor activities, spoke to parents and staff and tracked the development records of some of the youngsters.

She recognised how staff incorporated learning into children’s play – for example, talking about the different parts of a tree with youngsters who had just completed a jigsaw puzzle of a tree – then revisiting the subject a short while later to reinforce their knowledge.

Describing staff as excellent role models, Ms Barter noted children learned from their example and were kind and considerate to others, understood the importance of sharing and turn-taking and behaved “exceptionally well”.

She added: “Children make outstanding progress because staff provide them with unlimited opportunities. Children are happy and eager to learn, and are very well prepared for school.”

The only recommendation Ms Barter gave for future improvement was for the nursery to develop further opportunities for children to explore technology.

Rosebud is one of six Montessori nurseries in the Tudor House Group, all of which hold the ‘outstanding’ rating.
