Investment to prevent flooding at Goddards Green

Greater protection will be offered to the Burgess Hill area during heavy rain when a multi-million pound scheme is finished.

Southern Water is investing £10million to upgrade Goddards Green Wastewater Treatment Works. The scheme, which started in 2012, is progressing well with major construction nearly complete.

This includes a new storm storage tank, which will be able to hold more than 900,000 litres of water during storms, preventing the risk of the treatment works becoming overwhelmed which can cause flooding.

Other improvements include the installation of new filters to give the treated wastewater an extra ‘polish’ before being released into the environment.

Southern Water Project Manager Dave Watkins said: “This is a major investment for the Goddards Green area and will have many environmental benefits.”

The main construction, being carried out by contractor 4Delivery, is expected to complete before the end of the year, after which testing of the new equipment will take place.

Goddards Green treatment works can treat up to 26 million litres of wastewater per day – that’s enough to fill nearly 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools – from a population of 46,000 people from Burgess Hill the and surrounding villages.
