Sponge-squeezing skills were put into action at fire stations across the county for The Fire Fighters Charity’s national car wash competitions, held in September and March.

One of the biggest fundraising events on the fire service calendar, the annual car wash events are an opportunity for residents to have their cars cleaned by firefighters, for a donation to the charity.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service managed to collect a total of £4,173.40 - more than any other fire service in the south east. Their hard work and dedication to raising money for the cause earned them a regional award.

Lee Neale, acting chief fire officer, said: “This is fantastic news for everyone involved. The Fire Fighters Charity exists for the benefit of fire services and our families and I would like encourage everyone to get involved whenever they can to allow the charity to continue doing its amazing work.”

He presented the award, for the most money raised in the region, to Ian Sinfield, the West Sussex service’s co-ordinator for the charity.

Mr Sinfield said: “This is a massive achievement but we couldn’t have done it without the people who came along and had their car washed.
