Age UK, in Haywards Heath, has closed after it was flooded yesterday (August 13) just two weeks after being completely refurbished.
The store manager Euryale Pragnell said she and her volunteers were working hard to save what they could from the wreckage at the store in South Road.
“It was like a waterfall coming down. It was seriously nasty,” she said.
“We will salvage and wash everything. We will not let any donations go to waste.”
Euryale said the store was the most popular one in the country so it was vital to get it back up and running.
“We need to raise money for those poor people who need it so we will be closed for as short as possible.
“The volunteers have come in and they are doing a fantastic job. They always work their socks off but particularly today.”
She said the rain water came through the roof at about 11.30am yesterday and everything in the store was soaked.
She added: “At the end of the day, nobody was hurt and that’s the important thing.”
