Good Samaritan comes to aid of collapsed 91-year-old in Haywards Heath

Independent Betty Beckers unexpectedly fell as she left Marks and Spencer in Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath on June 26 at midday.

And this week the grateful pensioner contacted the Mid Sussex Times as she wanted to say a heartfelt ‘Thankyou’ to the mystery Good Samaritans who rushed to her aid and dialled 999 for an ambulance.

She said: “A big thank you to the ladies who on June 26 at 12pm assisted me when I collapsed in Marks and Spencer carpark and waited until the ambulance arrived.

“I don’t know what happened, maybe it’s my old age, it could be a combination of low blood pressure, a slight infection.

“A group of delightful ladies gathered to my aid, they called the ambulance, put a note on my car and looked after me.”
Betty smashed her hearing aid as it was ‘quite a fall’, but luckily no bones were broken.

“The NHS and A&E were very good, I can’t speak highly enough of everyone,” she added.

One of the helpers who found her leaning against her car with bleeding hands contacted the Middy after reading the thanks in this week’s paper (July 10).

Helper Sarah Depledge said: “She was leaning against my car with few others huddled around.

“One by one the others had to go, I stayed with her, I got my husband’s coat from the boot.”

Two community support officers came to help before the ambulance arrived.

“She was with it, but she’s 91, she had cut hands,” Sarah added.

“She’s a lovely lady, she was worried that she was in the way, I told her no no no it’s fine, she’s a very sweet lady, I’m glad she’s OK.”
