Renowned urban artist, Tom Goulden, led the workshop for a group of local youngsters to give the skate park within Court Bushes Recreation Ground a new lease of life by running a graffiti workshop.

The colourful creations build on the recent work to transform the ex-servicemen’s club at Court Bushes Recreation Ground into a new community space.

The project is supported by community grants from Mid Sussex District Council and Clarion Futures Communities, but Hurst Festival, which arranged the workshop, took the regeneration a step further.

Tom has over 15 years’ experience working creatively with children and young people in schools and community youth settings.

The team worked tirelessly throughout a rainy Saturday to create energetic and original works of art which brought to life the Hurst Festival theme of ‘peace’, as well as allowing them the freedom to interpret the space and bring it to life in their own way – putting their unique Hurstpierpoint stamp on it.

Tom said: “I’m so pleased the event was so well attended. We had approximately 15 11 plus-year-olds come through and help with the design and creation of the murals. Despite inclement weather we got it all done. I hugely appreciate all the support this Saturday around sign up, food and marquees.”

Jane Haskins, neighbourhood investment officer said: “Clarion Futures are proud to sponsor this event at Court Bushes, the skate park looks fantastic and is a credit to the young people involved in the project”.

Hurst Festival were delighted with the finished project and are already planning ahead for 2019.

Dawn Rennie, the local community development officer is working hard to engage with the community through events like this and would love to hear from anyone who has ideas or would like to be involved in building the community in preparation for the reopening of the Court Bushes Hall next year.  Dawn can be contacted on 0730 58482222 or email [email protected]
