Hassocks nursery resolves Ofsted ‘breach’

An Ofsted inspector has found Albourne Under Fives, based in Albourne Village Hall in Hassocks ‘requires improvement’.

The report states: “The owner has failed to record information about the vetting process she has completed to demonstrate that all staff are suitable to work with children. This is a breach of the safeguarding and welfare requirements.”

However, staff confirmed to inspector Alison Weaver that the staff had all been ‘vetted’.

A spokeswoman for Albourne Under Fives said: “All staff are CRB/DBS checked prior to starting with Albourne Under Fives, to ensure their suitability to work with children.

“Ofsted have advised that details of these checks should be kept within the setting. All staff were CRB/DBS checked and had their certificates themselves, so the following day these details were within the setting, so the ‘breach’ was resolved. Ofsted has been made aware of this.”

Inspector Alison Weaver said the owner ‘implements suitable recruitment and induction procedures’ to make sure staff are suitable to work with children. However, to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must ‘maintain a record of the completed criminal records disclosure details for all staff’.

The inspector praised the nursery for meeting the needs of the children adding that staff are ‘friendly, approachable and supportive’.

The report said: “Staff work closely with parents and keep them well informed about children’s progress.

“They actively encourage parents to share what they know about their children and continue learning at home.

“Children move confidently around the setting and settle quickly at their favourite activities. Staff interact well with children as they play and help them make good progress in their learning.”
