HOSPITAL FIRE UPDATE: 'It was like a bomb went off'

A patient who was at the scene of a fire at a hospital this afternoon (Monday June 6) said he thought a bomb had gone off.

Four fire crews were called to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill after three ambulances and part of the building caught fire at around 2.15pm.

Darren Penticost, from Slinfold, was down at the hospital waiting to see a doctor.

He said: “I came out to use the phone and the next thing I knew there was this black haze and all I could smell was burning.

“The next thing I heard was lots of explosions. It was like a bomb went off.

“It is chaos down here now. There are lots of police cars and fire engines.”

The flames were extinguished at around 3.30pm.

Crews are still at the scene investigating. The cause of the blaze it not yet known.
