VILLAGE CINEMA The new season starts with great news as it seems we have officially one of the top community cinemas in the country. At the Cinema for All national conference weekend in Sheffield Hurst came back with a number of awards, including awards for Best Programming, Best Marketing and Publicity and, to top it all, a Special Mention in the overall prize for Film Society of the Year. If you haven’t visited the Village Cinema before, you need perhaps to go and see why we are winning these awards! On Friday 23th October is screened one of the most thrillingly entertaining films of the last year, Whiplash (15). This tale of a music student who is an aspiring jazz drummer and the maestro who runs the elite college band he joins with a rod of iron features blistering performances from the two leads. You don’t need to be a fan of, or even like jazz, or drumming to enjoy this film. The Saturday Cinema returns on 24th October and to provide fun for all the family, and the first film is the very funny recent film Mr Peabody and Sherman (U). The Sunday Cinema season returns with a series of recent films which may have had more of a general release than our weekday films, and is targeted at people who missed them, or perhaps were not able to get to the cinema to see them...or people who would just like to see them on the big screen again. This will be the wonderful recent adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd (12A). The live NT programme for November is Of Mice and Men starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd. This screening comes from the Broadway production and received ecstatic reviews. Many people queued round the block to see the Hollywood actor James Franco on stage, but they left blown away by the performance of Chris O’Dowd. Note the first Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live broadcast is of The Winter’s Tale, starring Judi Dench is sold out. Tickets for all films can be bought online at www.hustfilms.com or at Mishon Mackay in the High Street. You do not have to be a member to come to the Village Cinema, but membership is still only £10 per annum and with this expanding range of fantastic films and theatrical events, the ticket price reductions and advance booking makes it incredible value for money.
