FESTIVAL 21 AT DANNY: is a big celebration on Saturday 3 September to mark the 21st Anniversary of the charity the Friends of Sussex Hospices, and promises to be the Hurst event of the year. There will be a spectacular Son et Lumiere, telling the story of Sussex from ancient times, showing Roman soldiers, Saxons and Normans, the Spanish Armada, the Civil War and depictions of both the wars, all projected onto the façade of Danny with a laser light show finale. In addition an air show with replica First World War fighter planes, vintage fun fair, huge classic car display and historic battle enactments. And live music from the Swingtime Sweethearts, local bands and even a Welsh male voice choir all the way from Wales for the event, an international dance troupe and more. Stroll around the lovely Danny grounds to take in the Big Top circus, wandering jesters and medieval musicians, chlidrens’ entertainers, and sample the food and drink on offer, be it at the licensed bar, stalls or the tea and cake in the marquee. You can even bring along your own picnic and chairs to watch the entertainment. Proceeds go to the 12 Sussex Hospice care providers, to fund the care given to young and old from East and West Sussex. Tickets are £22 per adult if booked in advance or £25 on the day, with children under 16 free accompanied by pre-booked adults or £5 on the day. Book online at www.festival21.co.uk.

MILLENIUM GARDEN: A reminder if you have been away on holiday that the big Monterey Pine has had to be felled, due to old age. However the plan by the committee for the garden trust is to use the lower parts of the four main trunks as a living sculpture, as a permanent reminder. The overall theme is to be of wildlife, and anyone can submit ideas or sketches by 31 August. So there is still time. Ideas to [email protected].
