HURST VILLAGE CINEMA’S next film is Nebraska (15) on Friday 29 January. This is a road movie with a difference, starring Bruce Dern as a grumpy old man set on travelling across the country to collect his winning prize in Nebraska. Tickets £4 members, £6 non members, doors open at 7.30pm

HURSTPIERPOINT HISTORICAL & GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY meets in the Guide Hall off Trinity Road car park at 8pm, on the last Friday of the month. January’s guest speaker on Friday 29 is Ian Gledhill who will be talking about Art Deco. This influential visual arts design appeared in France before World War 1 and flourished in the 1920s to 1940s. Visitors welcome, £3 and members annual subscription is £10.

CHARITY screening on Saturday 30 January of the new and entertaining adaption of Paddington (PG). Tickets £4 and doors open at 2.30pm.

MESSY CHURCH for all the family on Saturday 30 January from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm at the Methodist Church, Cuckfield Road. Go along to enjoy an afternoon of craft activities, Bible story and songs followed by food. There is no charge for the afternoon but there will be a donations basket. Children must be accompanied by a trusted adult.

SUNDAY CINEMA on 31 January screens Philomena (PG) an award winning poignant true story, of the search by a mother to find the son she gave birth to in 1950s Ireland, but was given away for adoption by the nuns who helped her. With Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.Tickets £3 doors open at 2.30pm.

RSPB BIRDWATCH THIS WEEKEND. One hour to count the feathered visitors in your garden/patio/courtyard. Check out the RSPB website for more information. Putting out food encourages birds into your garden, and helps them to survive, particularly in winter. Timed for this the Pet Shop in the High Street has a display of plenty of products from food to nest boxes and happy to help with advice.

ALBOURNE CIRCULAR WALK on Tuesday 2 February at 10am. Mid Sussex Ramblers are organising a circular walk starting at Albourne, roadside parking on the west side on the B2118 south of Albourne opposite Arden Grange. (BN6 9SP) on Wednesday 3 February. This is a flat walk and takes in Blackstone, Park Farm, Wyndhams Farm and Cobbs Barn. Distance about 10 miles. Everyone welcome.

HURSTPIERPOINT AFTERNOON CLUB meets at the Village Centre at 2.15pm on Tuesday 2 February to hear Donald Blake talking about A Shepherd’s Year. Tea, biscuits and chat add to an enjoyable afternoon.

CHAILEY HERITAGE FOUNDATION has a free event on Thursday 4 February which may be of interest to some of you. Doors will be open to everyone for a talk on its history and an opportunity to learn about the work that the charity does today. Established in 1903, Chailey Heritage Foundation has a history of supporting children and young people with a range of conditions such as tuberculosis, rickets, and polio, even treating injured soldiers during both World Wars. Guest speaker, Dr Julie Anderson, Reader in the History of Modern Medicine at the University of Kent, will talk about Chailey Heritage Foundation’s pioneering approach to the rehabilitation of soldiers injured in the First World War. After the talk, guests will have an opportunity to have a look round some of the facilities, meet some of the charity’s beneficiaries and speak to its dedicated staff. The event will take place at Chailey Heritage Foundation between 6pm-8pm and is free of charge, but numbers are limited. HURSTPIERPOINT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY on February 9 in the Village Centre at 7.45pm has ‘Confessions of a Gardener’, a humorous talk by Alan Sargent who has spent many years constructing gardens, including restoring the historic gardens of Goodwood House whilst he was Head Gardener there between 2001 and 2007. All welcome.
