A junction in Haywards Heath has been temporarily closed due to drivers ignoring diversion signs and using a road as a ‘rat run’.
The Penland Road junction with Balcombe Road is closed from today (Friday July 17), meaning drivers cannot enter or leave Penland Road at the junction.
West Sussex County Council said a ‘small minority’ of drivers have ignored road closure signs diverting traffic away from major road improvements in Balcombe Road, using Penland Road as a rat run instead.
Concerns have been raised by members of the public about the increase in traffic in the road, particularly around Harlands Primary School.
The council said parents dropping and picking up children at the school during the final week of term will be able to do so via alternative routes.
The closure is expected to remain in place until Wednesday 12 August.
All traffic should now follow the signed diversion route: Hanlye Lane, London Road, A272, Perrymount Road, Mill Green Road and vice-versa.
