Local resident Bob Bayliss feared for the safety of elderly people after seeing water gushing out of a hole in the pavement near Lloyds Chemist. He said: “When we have some cold weather there is a big risk that the water will freeze over and the pavement will become like a skating rink.”

But David Winterburn, regional network manager at South East Water, said: “We were notified of a small leak on High Street, Cuckfield on 11 January. A technician was sent on the same day to investigate and we can now confirm there is no leak on our pipework.

“Our technicians work around the clock to stop leaks and bursts on our 14,500 kilometres of water mains. We would like to thank our customers for working with us in an effort to save water.”
