LONDON RIOTS UPDATE: Sussex Police support to London public order events

Sussex Police sent a number of officers specially trained in public order policing to London last night (Monday 8).

The South East Air Support Unit’s two helicopters - based in Sussex and Hampshire - also assisted the Metropolitan Police.

The move was part of a routine mutual aid agreements between forces, under which assistance can be given to help police large incidents.

Meanwhile, rumours of unrest in Sussex were circulating via social media sites.

However, police say they were not called to any related incidents of violence or disorder in the county last night.

All officers were returned safely to Sussex early this morning (Tuesday 9).

A spokesperson for Sussex Police have made clear that ‘the support sent to London was drafted from officers who would have otherwise been on rest days and normal policing was not affected’.
