Long vehicles set to delay drivers in Sussex

Officers from the roads policing unit and the Highways Agency will be accompanying the first vehicle tomorrow from the A27 at Polegate along the A259 to its destination just off King Offa Way in Bexhill.

Minor roads connecting to the A27 and the A259 between these points will be temporarily closed as the vehicle passes them. The vehicle is very wide so will need both sides of the carriageway to be closed to other traffic at times during the journey, from about 6am to 9am.

On Sunday a second vehicle will be using the A23 southbound and then the A27 and A259 to the same destination in Bexhill. Although that vehicle is long it is not exceptionally wide so is not expected to cause disruption until it reaches Lewes.

Sergeant Dan Pitcher said: “On Sunday we expect the A23 and A27 will be affected until about 7am, the A27 between Lewes and Polegate between 7am and 9am and then the A27 in Polegate to the A259 in Bexhill from 9am to midday.

“We are not in charge of moving the vehicles, we are just making sure they are moved in a safe and controlled manner.

“It would be too dangerous to move the vehicles when it is dark even though the roads would be more clear than in daylight.

“We have chosen to allow them to be moved early on Saturday and Sunday because that should be when the roads are at their quietest in the daylight and should cause the minimum disruption.

“That being said, motorists should prepare for some delay if they use those roads on Saturday or Sunday morning and we would ask them to be patient.”
