Mains uprgrade will take nearly a year

Burgess Hill will be awash with temporary traffic lights from the middle of September when work begins on replacing 2.6 kilometres of ageing water mains.

South East Water is spending £670,000 on installing a new pipeline in several roads within the town as part of its upgrade programme and the work will not be over until the summer of 2014.

The company is holding a drop-in session on Wednesday, August 28 at the Sheldrake Suite, Martlets Hall in Civic Way between 4.30pm and 6.30pm where a timetable of works will be available.

Engineers start digging in Mill Road on September 16 and temporary traffic lights will be in operation for about 19 weeks.

Work on the other roads in the scheme will be staggered from November onwards, with temporary traffic lights at Park Road for 14 weeks from January 2, in St John’s Road for five weeks from April 7, in an area including Noel Rise, The Ridgeway, The Twitten and Noel Green for 16 weeks from April 7 and in Crescent Road for 15 weeks from May 12.

The other roads in the renewal scheme are Mill Wood and Church Close where traffic flow signs will be in place. South East Water says the new mains will improve water pressure and reduce the number of bursts.
