Man in life-threatening condition after assault in Burgess Hill

A 20-year-old man is in a life-threatening condition in hospital after suffering serious head injuries during an assault at the weekend.

Sussex Police said two men were attacked during an argument with two other men in Mill Road, Burgess Hill, at the junction with Millers Way, at about 3.15am on Sunday (June 28).

A 24-year-old man suffered minor facial injuries and was treated in hospital but released later while a 20-year-old is still in hospital in critical condition.

Detective Inspector Rachel Carr said: “One of the victims is very seriously ill in hospital.

“We need to speak to anyone who was in or around Mill Road in the early hours of Sunday morning and saw or heard anything suspicious.

“At this stage we don’t know why the attack happened or what had happened in the hours beforehand that might have prompted it.

“When we were called the attackers had left the scene, possibly in a van. We want to trace anyone who may have seen a van being driven along Mill Road at speed at about 3.15am.

“If you have any information at all please contact us.”

A 22-year-old man from Brighton and a 22-year-old man from Burgess Hill have been arrested. Both are currently in custody being questioned on suspicion of assault.
