Peter Browne, of Highbrook, near Ardingly, and Merv Huggett, of Lindfield, were featured on The One Show last night and will present their Sunday Morning Breakfast Machine on the BBC2 show tonight (Tuesday June 21).

Mr Browne said their ‘mad contraption’ can make a cup of tea or coffee, pick, cook and deliver an egg, make toast and even deliver newspapers.

He explained: “The contraption is made from welded steel and aluminium with 13 good quality DC motors, stepper motors, servos and gears all controlled by eight microprocessors.

“There are three main elements - the Tea/Coffee mechanism, on turning on the masterswitch it does a reset, then heats up the copper boiler for one minute. Tap is opened by an archimedes screw attached to a 12v motor, fills the cup with boiling water then closes. Cup moves under the tea or coffee bag and the jiggler turns on for 30 secs. Cup is then delivered to the table, pauses and returns to the boiler.

“The egg crane also does a reset and the Pyrex Glass Boiler heats up for 30 seconds. The Egg crane, all worked by three 12v stepper motors, picks up the egg from the battery hen, drops it into the boiling water for 4 mins 30 secs then picks it out and delivers it to the table, pauses and returns to the hen.

“The Infra Red toasting elements turn on and the toast delivery ramp drops down onto the table, controlled by a 12v motor. After inserting the bread, 2 stepper motors control the toaster as it sweeps back and fore 24 times, turns over and does another 22 sweeps, it then drops the toast down the ramp onto the table. The ramps lifts back up and the toaster goes back to its start position.

“Other bits of mechanics deliver the newspaper, clear up the table and two men appear to drive a generator and a pump.”
