Carolyn Robinson, donor relationship manager at the hospice, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by the staff and customers from Sainsbury’s and are looking forward to planning many exciting events over the coming year.”

The shop’s local charity scheme is now in its sixth year and gives customers the chance to vote for their favourite local charity to be considered to receive a year of support from their Sainsbury’s store.

Sainsbury’s Deputy Store Manager, Steve Hudson, said, “We’ve had a great response from our customers this year, both through in-store and online votes. We’re delighted to have chosen a charity which touched many of our colleagues’ hearts.

“We will now be working closely with the charity to ensure they really benefit from being our Local Charity for the next 12 months.”

The scheme has risen more than £6 million to support local charities since 2009.

St Peter & St James Hospice prvides specialist care, and support for those living with progressive, life limiting illnesses from East and West Sussex including Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and surrounding villages.

Last year it provided care for more than 600 patients and their families.

All services are free of charge and the hospice receives less than 14% of its funding from the Government.
