Mid Sussex Vision Express stores join forces with Macular Society

Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath Vision Express branches joined forces with the Macular Society to fundraise for the first Macular awareness week.

Macular degeneration (MD) is an eye condition which can lead to the loss of central vision.

Macular Week, which was held from July 6 to 12, aimed to highlight the importance of research funding, which could eventually help to find a cure for macular conditions.

Vision Express stores nationwide dedicated the week to supporting the Macular Society, their charity partner.

On Saturday July 11, the teams at Vision Express in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath raised money by inviting the public to take part in a ‘Tea for MD’ event.

They were joined by Stella Black, regional support and development manager for the Macular Society in the South East.

Richard Howard, Burgess Hill store manager, said: “Our thanks go to Stella for coming into store and helping with our fundraising efforts.”

“It’s a great morale boost for the team to do something meaningful for such a good cause, and having her here really spurred us on - every single penny we raise will count, and we thank the local community for digging deep to support us.”

Cathy Yelf, CEO of the Macular Society, said: “By 2020 almost 700,000 Britons will have late stage age-related macular degeneration. We are fighting for more funding for macular research because our ageing society means many more people are developing the condition. We urgently need to find a solution.”

The Macular Society has also created its very own pair of giant heart-shaped sunglasses to mark the week, which toured the UK and visited a number of Vision Express stores.
