Sir Nicholas and fellow MP Frank Field - co-chairmen of the cross-party group on balanced migration - called on the Minister for Immigration in the Commons to introduce ID cards ‘particularly in regard to national security and the protection of all our citizens from terrorism.’

But Minister for Immigration James Brokenshire said: “We are taking various measures to enhance the security of this country, but our judgment remains that ID cards are not the right way forward.” He said the Government had introduced biometric residence permits and were taking further measures to ‘remove those people who do not have authority to be in this country.’
