Newly elected Mid Sussex MP Mims Davies celebrates win: 'I am absolutely over the moon'

New Conservative MP for Mid Sussex Mims Davies is celebrating her election victory.

Ms Davies won by more than 18,000 votes and succeeds Sir Nicholas Soames, who represented the district since 1997.

The mum-of-two, who lives in Haywards Heath, secured 33,455 votes.

Lib Dems came second with 15,258 and Labour third with 11,218.

Speaking on stage, Ms Davies said it was an honour to be the new MP for Mid Sussex. "I cannot believe it, I am incredibly honoured," she commented.

"Thank you so much to the returning officer, all the staff, everybody who has worked over the last few weeks to get this election ready and through the day into this morning."

She continued: "Thank you to my campaign manager, my agent and everybody at the Mid Sussex Assocation, you have done done an incredible job supporting me over a whirlwind couple of weeks - an absolutely unexpected couple of weeks."

Speaking to the Middy afterwards, Ms Davies said she wanted to thank all the voters for putting their trust in her.

She said: "I am absolutely over the moon. I will be the representative for everybody, no matter how you voted and how you felt about Brexit or this December election.

"I will be doing what's right for Mid Sussex, making sure it's a place that we know and love to bring up your family, to continue and run your business, to send your children to school.

"I will make sure we have that strong voice in government in what looks like a Conservative majority government under Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

"I am delighted to be the local girl, come home to represent my home, It's absolutely something I could never have dreamed of. "

Asking how she planned on celebrating, she said "I might be down at Broadway in Haywards Heath at various points, but, firstly, I've got lots of people to write to and thank and make sure that people understand what this means to me. I have already replied to about 600 emails over the last couple of weeks, talking to people about what matters to them.

"We start back in parliament next week.The Prime Minister has vowed to get Brexit done by the end of January and at some point I probably need to get my Christmas decorations up!"

Ms Davies said she was extremely grateful for people who came out to vote for her in the cold and wet weather on Thursday.

"It was a huge turn out," she said, adding: "People want to have a voice in Westminster."

Commenting on replacing Mr Soames, who she said had a 'strong voice in government', she said she had 'very big shoes to fill'.

"It's amazing to be the local girl being able to move that forward and I vow to listen and hear and connect and understand the community," she said.

As Mid Sussex's new MP sh, Ms Davies said she will 'make sure to be out on the ground listening, engaging and helping constituents',.

She added: "I love all the community action, the charities, the organisations, and I will be helping constituents with everything they need, and also making sure that that a voice is in government and that we are getting our fair share when it comes to Mid Sussex, that we are not drowned out and that we make sure this continues to be a great place to live, work and bring your family up."
